FERALSTAT UPDATE - JANUARY 2012

From the site author -

We have fed Feralstat (a powdered hormone which is added to food for birth control purposes) for over a year now to a colony of 15 cats at an apartment complex where the daily caretaker had not responded to offers to help TNR. In that time only two kittens were observed, and since no female in the regular group ever showed signs of pregnancy or nursing, we believe the kittens were the product of other cats in the area (the apartment complex is bordered by acres of empty land and many other apartment complexes.)

Although the Feralstat site has disappeared from the Web, and emails have not been answered, a Google search of "Feralstat topix" has postings from caretakers who have spoken to their veterinarians and been prescribed Ovaban, megestrol acetate, or Megace liquid for humans, all of which are the chemical equivalent of the main ingredient in Feralstat.

VETERINARY DRUGS RECALLED-SIDE EFFECTS INCLUDE DEATH

American Humane is reporting that two commonly used veterinary drugs have been recalled, yet many veterinarians and most pet owners are unaware of the recall. For more information go to www.americanhumane.org/protecting-animals/veterinary-drug-recalled

LUCKY BAMBOO NOT SO LUCKY FOR CATS

A potted plant commonly sold in dish gardens and called "lucky bamboo" is actually a lily, and poisonous to cats. For a comprehensive list of plants that are toxic and non-toxic to pets, visit the poison control area of the ASPCA site - www.aspca.org/pet-care/poison-control
